- Research and development
Proteins everywhere you look - we are already working today on the nutritional concepts of tomorrow. Plant-derived proteins from legumes such as blue lupin and pea or proteins based on mealworms demonstrate the innovative strength of the food industry in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The state can boast several research institutes with a reputation in the food industry.
Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences has been active in the field of food technology for more than 30 years. Its research projects aim to make the food production chain healthier and more sustainable. For many such projects, the Center for Nutrition and Food Technology (ZELT) has been able to attract industrial partners. In this way, findings from institutional research can be transferred to industry. Numerous regional companies have benefited from this so far.
A "Center for Biogenic Value Creation and Smart Farming" is being established in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania under the umbrella of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. The total funding amounts to 60 million euros. The center will research and develop innovative technologies for sustainable agriculture along the entire value chain - from seed to refined product, both on land and in water. The goal is a holistic change in agriculture toward innovative processing concepts. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the focus is on the application of artificial intelligence and visualization in the context of agricultural practice in order to promote sustainable, resource-conserving and emission-reducing agriculture.
In cooperation with an agricultural trade group, the project "Physics for Food - a region rethinks!" was launched in 2018 by Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences and the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Research and Technology e. V. (INP). It comprises lead projects that develop physical innovations for various areas of agriculture and food processing. They address topics of physical processes for seed treatment, treatment of plants and crop yields, and optimization of plant raw materials for the food & feed sector. The aim of each of the three areas is to optimize product quality, reduce or replace chemical substances and strengthen against diseases, pests or environmental influences.
