  • Research and development

Proteins - everywhere you look. We are already working on the nutritional concepts of tomorrow - for example plant-derived proteins from legumes like blue lupins and peas, and proteins based on mealworms, demonstrating the innovative strength of the food industry in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The state boasts several research institutes with strong reputations in the food industry.

Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences has been active in the field of food technology for more than 30 years. Its research projects aim to make the food production chain healthier and more sustainable. For many of these projects, its Center for Nutrition and Food Technology (ZELT) has been able to attract industrial partners, allowing institutional research to be transferred easily into the industry. Numerous regional companies have benefited from this process.

A ‘Center for Biogenic Value Creation and Smart Farming‘ is being established in MV under the umbrella of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, with funding of 60 million euros. The center will research and develop innovative technologies for sustainable agriculture along the entire value chain - from seed to refined product, both on land and in water. The goal is a holistic change in agriculture toward innovative processing concepts.
In Mecklenburg-Vorpommen, a major research theme is the application of artificial intelligence and visualization to agricultural practice, in order to promote sustainable, resource-conserving and emission-reducing agriculture.

In cooperation with an agricultural trade group, the project "Physics for Food - a region rethinks!" was launched in 2018 by Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences and the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Research and Technology e. V. (INP). It comprises projects that develop physical innovations for various areas of agriculture and food processing, addressing physical processes for seed treatment, treatment of plants and crop yields, and optimization of plant raw materials for the food & feed sector. The aim of each of the three areas is to optimize product quality, reduce or replace chemical substances and strengthen against diseases, pests or environmental influences.
