The food industry in the north of eastern Germany is characterized by innovation, productivity and quality. In addition, there are excellently trained and motivated employees with high regional company loyalty. • Workforce and networks

Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences has extensive expertise in applied research and development, especially in the fields of agricultural economics and food technology, agricultural economics, agricultural marketing, crop production, the entire production chain, and regional development. Here, young people in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Food Science are trained to become modern specialists who can meet the demands of food production. In addition, innovative research projects are realized with regional and international partners from the food industry. Companies in the food industry can thus count on first-class graduates with practical experience.

The Marketing Association of the Agricultural and Food Industry Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e. V. (AMV) is active on behalf of producers, processors and manufacturers of foodstuffs and luxury foods in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The association has established itself in the highest-turnover sector of the processing industry in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - the agricultural and food industry. As the largest network of the state's food industry, the AMV organizes joint marketing activities and focuses on sustainable sales promotion and lobbying.

The food industry is growing continuously and consolidating its position as a leading industry in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. To ensure that this remains the case, well-trained and motivated specialists are indispensable. Finding and retaining skilled workers is the central challenge facing companies and is therefore the focus of the Food Academy. The association bundles capacities and requirements, ensures an exchange of experience between companies, develops solution strategies and implements concrete steps to make the industry attractive as an employer. Today, 21 companies with over 3,500 employees are already involved in the association.

  • Research and development

Proteins everywhere you look - we are already working today on the nutritional concepts of tomorrow. Plant-derived proteins from legumes such as blue lupin and pea or proteins based on mealworms demonstrate the innovative strength of the food industry in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The state can boast several research institutes with a reputation in the food industry.

Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences has been active in the field of food technology for more than 30 years. Its research projects aim to make the food production chain healthier and more sustainable. For many such projects, the Center for Nutrition and Food Technology (ZELT) has been able to attract industrial partners. In this way, findings from institutional research can be transferred to industry. Numerous regional companies have benefited from this so far.

A "Center for Biogenic Value Creation and Smart Farming" is being established in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania under the umbrella of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. The total funding amounts to 60 million euros. The center will research and develop innovative technologies for sustainable agriculture along the entire value chain - from seed to refined product, both on land and in water. The goal is a holistic change in agriculture toward innovative processing concepts. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the focus is on the application of artificial intelligence and visualization in the context of agricultural practice in order to promote sustainable, resource-conserving and emission-reducing agriculture.

In cooperation with an agricultural trade group, the project "Physics for Food - a region rethinks!" was launched in 2018 by Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences and the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Research and Technology e. V. (INP). It comprises lead projects that develop physical innovations for various areas of agriculture and food processing. They address topics of physical processes for seed treatment, treatment of plants and crop yields, and optimization of plant raw materials for the food & feed sector. The aim of each of the three areas is to optimize product quality, reduce or replace chemical substances and strengthen against diseases, pests or environmental influences.
